I have read in color ever since I learned to read, 60 years ago!
Books need to reflect our communities, everybody deserves to feel like they belong.
It’s the right thing to do!
It is important that children see themselves in the books that are read to them and that they read. I read to first graders at my neighborhood school. It is visible in the eyes of the children when I read a book with their ethnicity, culture, or race.
This nation was founded and carefully constructed on systemic racism. And when Lincoln united a Nation divided, those beliefs didn’t vanish—they hid in plain sight. By raising our hands to identity as anti-racist, we help break down these barriers and build a better tomorrow.
