Having just retired from my local public library and being an avid, if eclectic, reader, I realize more and more that it’s important to hear everyone’s voices! The more we can view the world through other cultures experiences, the more we can understand each other. More love, less hate!
I’m an advocate for diverse and inclusive reading and will make it my priority to keep my library filled with BIPOC titles.
By reading about others perspectives and experiences we educate ourselves on their lives, which enables us to advocate for their needs, and it promotes unity. I also believe that everyone deserves the feeling that comes over you when you read a book and can identify with a character, or idea.
Both of my LFLs are in front of correctional facilities, and most who go past the LFLs are visitors to those incarcerated. Most do not have the resources to buy or visit the library for books for their children. I believe these children should have all the opportunities to read.
We feel strongly about supporting our diverse neighbors and encourage the reading of diverse text.
I want my collection to be windows, mirrors, and sliding-glass doors for my diverse community.
For me, to read in color is to see the world as it really is. We need to advocate for diversity as this is where great ideas live. We all deserve to have a voice no matter the color of our skin, where we come from or who we love.
